Retribution

Editor: Since his 2016 campaign, Donald Trump has called the Bible his favorite book, a sentiment he reiterated during a March 2024 promotion of a patriotic-themed version. When asked to name a favorite Bible verse during his first campaign, he declined, calling it “very personal” and saying he didn’t “want to get into specifics.” Humm.

During racial justice protests in 2020, then-President Trump held up a Bible for a photo opportunity in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a gesture that was widely condemned by religious leaders for its use of faith as a prop.

Eight months into his second term, Trump has fulfilled his pledge to make retaliation a central feature of his presidency. He has revoked security clearances and Secret Service protection for people he doesn’t like. He has issued executive orders punishing law firms he disfavored. His administration has fired attorneys who worked on cases against Trump and his supporters, while the president set those supporters free with pardons.

Trump has repeatedly accused the Democrats of weaponizing the justice system as he promised revenge. “I am your retribution,” he said in March 2023 at the Conservative Political Action Conference.

The following Bible verses proclaim that believers should not seek retribution, but instead should bless and forgive those who have hurt them:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” The words of Jesus in Matthew 5:38-39.

“Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord.” Romans 12:19.

“You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:18.

“Bear with each other and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13.

Forgiveness is an unknown concept in Trump’s mind.

It is concerning that 80% of Christian Evangelicals and Fundamentalists support a wannabe dictator who embodies all the characteristics of a fascist. Fortunately, or unfortunately, you are known by the company you keep – birds of a feather flock together.
