Skill Levels Vary

Editor

I had to laugh out loud at the opinion column by Tim Graham (of the Media Research Center) in the October 25th Mining Gazette. Mr. Graham is outraged that fact checks by PolitiFact have rated Trump statements as “Pants on Fire” 217 times since 2007, and Biden statements as “Pants on Fire” only 7 times in the same period.

I just find it hilarious that a professed conservative would now be demanding “equality of results” over “equality of opportunity!”

Wildlife Crossings for Michigan

Dear Editor,

According to State Farm, Michigan ranks second in the United States for most animal-vehicle collision claims over the last year. Oftentimes, these collisions are fatal for animals and people. This includes the 60 moose killed in the last four years in collisions in the UP (Daily Mining Gazette, 10/21/2025). At that rate, according to the Michigan DNR’s Tyler Petroelje, “We could have as many as 5% of our moose population hit and killed by vehicles in a given year.”

The most straightforward solution to prevent unnecessary animal-vehicle collisions is wildlife crossings that allow animals to safely cross roadways while keeping crucial habitat intact. Luckily, in a win for wildlife, drivers, and hunters, the Michigan Department of Transportation and the DNR are teaming up to identify the best places to put future wildlife crossings across the state, thanks to a federal grant.

It is important that this work results in new wildlife crossings so that Michigan’s wildlife have safe places to cross roadways and drivers have fewer collisions. Protecting our wildlife will benefit all Michiganders and help to preserve our state’s rich natural heritage.

Sincerely,

Calvin Floyd
