Safe Light for Migrating Birds

Editor:

An estimated one billion birds die from window strikes every year in the U.S. Simply turning down lights can reduce bird strikes by 80%. Buildings and homes are encouraged to adopt “Safe Light for Safe Flight” during migration time: 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. in the spring from March 15 – May 31 and in the fall: August 15 -October 15.

Inside: Dim lobby lights, unless needed for safety or wayfinding. Turn off office lights when leaving for the day. Close window coverings.

Outside: Businesses and homes should consider dimming or turning off flood/security lights, or directing lights downward rather than up. Put necessary lights on timers or even better– use motion sensors.

Please share this information with others to increase the survival of migrating birds.
