Huskies women’s basketball team hosts Lake Superior State in weekend series

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech Huskies women’s basketball team will be home again this weekend with a Friday and Saturday match up against Lake Superior State.

The Huskies tip off at 3 p.m. today 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Huskies (3-1) are coming off a split decision last weekend against the Northwood Timberwolves. They lost Friday evening at the buzzer 58-56 but came back to win on Saturday 67-48.

“It will be good to come into this weekend off a big win,” said Tech head coach Sam Hoyt. “Hopefully it will give us some momentum for both games.”

The Huskies lead the GLIAC with 25 blocks or 6.2 blocked shots per game. That puts them at sixth in all of NCAA Division II for blocked shots. They are led by sophomore Katelyn Meister who has seven. Sophomore Sloane Zenner follows with five.

Hoyt hopes that some of that defensive success will transfer over to Tech’s performance on the boards both offensively and defensively.

“We are giving up way to many offensive rebounds,” she said. “We do not have that one tall player that grabs 10 rebounds a game. So, we all have to help out. We are very athletic and that obviously helps. It’s rebound by committee for us.”

Hoyt added that the team needs to do better at taking care of the ball in terms of fewer turnovers. The huskies are averaging more that 15 turnovers per game which is too many in the eyes of their coach.

“We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” Hoyt said. “We are shooting for 12 (turnovers) or less per game. We have been working on taking care of the ball and valuing every offensive possession. We need to get a shot up instead of turning the ball over.”

The Huskies are led in scoring by junior Ellie McKay who is averaging 13.5 points per game. She is followed by freshman Jordan Ludescher with 11.3.

“Ellie brings a toughness and an energy and just refuses to lose,” Hoyt said. “As well she can just flat out shoot. She does a lot of things well and is such a great leader.”

Tech is averaging 62 points per game. In their first four games, they are shooting 41 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

They will face a Lakers team (1-3) that is averaging 56 points per game. They are led by sophomore Mattison Rayman who pours in 15.5 points per game.

We will have to defend well as they have some very good shooters,” Hoyt said. “We will need to take them out of their rhythm and make them feel uncomfortable on the floor.”
