Michigan Tech men visit Lake Superior State

HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will be on the road this weekend for a two-game series against the Lake Superior State University Lakers.

The Huskies (3-1) hope to extend their winning streak to five games with a sweep tonight and Saturday.

Today’s game tips off at 3 p.m. while Saturday’s game starts at 1 p.m.

“We are going up against a tough Lake Superior team,” said Husky head coach Kevin Luke. “They are tough at home and very athletic.”

The Huskies are coming off a sweep of the Northwood Timberwolves last week on the road. They won Friday by a score of 62-49 and Saturday they shot their way to a 68-63 victory

Of particular significance last weekend was the return of MTU junior guard Owen White. In the two victories, White scored an impressive 49 points and had 17 rebounds. For his efforts he was named the Player of the Week by the GLIAC North Division.

“Owen has really improved and stepped up his game,” Luke said. “I’m very happy for him because he deserves some recognition.”

Luke added that after a poor performance in their second game of the season against Purdue Northwest, the sweep against the Timberwolves felt good.

“Beating a good Northwood team was huge for us in boosting our confidence and recognizing our weaknesses,” he noted. We need to continue to improve on offense Our defense continues to be strong and I want it to stay the way this weekend.”

The Huskies will face a Lakers team (2-2) that was 12-16 in the 2019-20 season. They are led this year by Malek Adams. As a junior, Adams was named First Team All- Conference for the 2018-19 season. That year he averaged 16 points per game with a 49 percent shooting percentage. He sat out last year due to a knee injury.

Meanwhile the Huskies are averaging a 62.5 points per game. They are shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point range. After Whites impressive 24.5 points per game a week ago, Tech is led by seniors Trent Bell with 13. 3 points per game and Dawson Bilski who is pouring in 11.8 points per game.

“Our transition defensive will be key,” Luke said. “Overall it should be a good weekend.”
