LL-H climbs to No. 2, Calumet still at No. 5 in UPSSA poll

The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes continued its ascent in the UPSSA Football Poll, as the Lakes now sit No. 2 in the Little Five Poll.

LL-H defeated the Bark River-Harris Broncos, handily, winning 40-16 Saturday at Warner Field. The Lakes (6-0, 3-0 Mid-Eastern) clinched a playoff berth with the victory and sit atop the Mid-Eastern Conference standings. This week, the Lakes will travel to face the Houghton Gremlins in a nonconference contest on Friday at 7 p.m. LL-H wraps up conference play at home with the North Dickinson Nordics and Munising Mustangs in back-to-back weeks to close the regular season.

The Calumet Copper Kings will most likely stay at No. 5 in the Big Five for the rest of the year unless any of the top four teams should lose in the coming weeks. Calumet outscored West Iron County 22-0 in the third quarter en route to a 34-7 win Friday at Agassiz Field. The Copper Kings will host the L’Anse Purple Hornets on Friday in Calumet’s final regular season home game. Calumet can clinch at least a share of the West-PAC title with a victory.

In last week’s biggest contest, the Menominee Maroons went on the road and defeated the No. 3 Escanaba Eskymos 28-14 to retain the top spot in the Big Five poll.

In local games this week, the Hancock Bulldogs (4-2) look to continue its playoff quest as they host the Gwinn Modeltowners (4-2). Hancock is coming off a thrilling 47-40 road victory over the Hurley Midgets. Hancock went 95 yards in 30 seconds to score the game-winning touchdown, leaving just one second left in the fourth quarter. Colton Salani found Alex Nordstrom for a 64-yard touchdown on the game-winning play. Salani completed 17 of 24 passes for 387 yards.

Also on Friday, the Baraga Vikings travel to face the Forest Park Trojans, and the Ontonagon Gladiators will head to Ewen-Trout Creek to play the Panthers on Saturday.
