Houghton caps 3-win week by beating RU

HOUGHTON Looking to build off a 6-5 overtime win over Utica Eisenhower on Friday, and a 9-2 over Kingsford on Tuesday, the Houghton Gremlins struck four times in the third period to defeat Rochester United on Saturday, 6-1, at Dee Stadium.

The Gremlins got on the board just 4 minutes, 12 seconds into the contest when Jacob Kruse scored an unassisted goal.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of Houghton until P.J. Donnelly found the back of the net on the power play 8:01 into the second period.

Houghton’s Taavi Rajala struck just 33 seconds into the third period only to see Rochester United even things just 31 seconds later on a goal from Mitchell Shell. It was the only one of 25 shots Gremlins goaltender Will Stier surrendered.

Dawson McKay added two goals, both on the power play, 1:50 apart with assists on both goals going to Rajala.

Clayton Sayen capped the scoring at 8:41 with an even strength goal that was set up by Seth Francois.

Up next, Houghton goes to Escanaba on Friday.
