HANCOCK — Nothing went right for the Finlandia University women’s basketball team in the second half of Saturday’s game against Bethany Lutheran.

As a result, the Lions ended up suffering an 83-50 defeat.

FU coach Steve Nordstrom said his team had trouble dealing with a 1-2-2 matchup zone defense by the Lady Vikings.

“They’re a fine defensive team and they really bottled us up,” Nordstrom said. “Take nothing away from them… They just outplayed us.”

The Blue and White managed to stay close in the first half. They were down 21-17 after one quarter and by a 39-34 margin at halftime.

The play of Julia Daavettila (Dollar Bay) and Kelsie Richards (Houghton) kept the Lions close in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Bethany Lutheran clamped down in the third quarter, giving up just nine points. BLC put in 26 themselves for a 65-43 margin.

“We stopped moving on offense in the second half,” Nordstrom. “And they kept attacking on offense.”

Julia Daavettila and Richards each put in 14 points for the 5-15 Lions.

Hancock products Taylor Pertile and Molly Berg combined for 13 points.

The hot shooting of Haley Sandin paced the Vikings, who are 11-12 on the season. Sandin gunned in 31 points. Rachel Sorensen had 14 more.

Finlandia travels to Gogebic CC on Wednesday.
