LL-H girls win Copper Mountain Conference

Jason Juno/Daily Globe (Ironwood) Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Laura Lyons competes in the long jump at Ontonagon Tuesday. She won the event with a leap of 14 feet, 11.25 inches.

ONTONAGON — The Bessemer boys are 6 for 6 this season after winning Tuesday’s Copper Mountain Conference track-and-field meet by over 100 points.

“That speaks for their work ethic and competitiveness as a team,” Bessemer coach Mark Mazzon said of their domination this season.

“Not one person can accomplish that on their own.”

They easily cleared the rest of the field, including runner-up Lake Linden-Hubbell, which they beat by a margin of 210 points to 107.666.

Bessemer’s Brayden Tomes was named the conference’s boys MVP by coaches after the meet. Tomes easily won the 300 hurdles and he was also a winner in the 200 dash Tuesday.

“Brayden’s such a natural runner,” Mazzon said. “You look at him, he’s running effortlessly.”

The Speedboys’ Isaiah Aili won the 800 and 3,200 run Tuesday and was named the conference’s top distance runner. If there was an award for biggest competitor in the conference, Aili would get that without a doubt.

“Isaiah, he’s not going to lose or he is going to leave it on the track,” Mazzon said. “They’re both our MVPs on our team.”

Mazzon said the whole team is helping Bessemer win, from the seniors like Ben Bogaczyk (shot put winner), Keegan Bolen (first in high jump) and Andrew Keller in the field events to underclassmen like Jamie Jett (first in 110 hurdles), Uriah Aili (1,600 run winner), Zach Baross (first in the pole vault), Andy Aspinwall and Devon Byers.

E-TC’s Jake Witt was first in the discus.

The Ontonagon boys were fourth with Ewen-Trout Creek sixth, Watersmeet ninth and Wakefield-Marenisco tied for 10th.

The Lake Linden-Hubbell girls also won their meet by more than 100 points, outpacing second-place Chassell 108-95.

The Lakes were led by conference girls MVP Laura Lyons, who won four events, the 100, 200 and 400 dashes and the long jump. She had a stern test in the 100, though, as W-M’s Hannah Plemons also finished in a time of 14.24 seconds in a different heat. But Lyons was awarded first.

Ontonagon was third with W-M fifth, Bessemer sixth, Ewen-Trout Creek tied for seventh and Watersmeet ninth.

The Gladiators’ Holly Wardynski was first in the discus. Teammate Jenny Labyak was first in the 300 hurdles.

Dollar Bay’s Cami Daavettila was named the Distance Runner of the Year after winning the 800 in a school record time of 2:34.50. Daavettila also took first in the 1600 (5:58.30) and was second in the 3200 behind Chassell’s Lela Rautiola (12:43.81).

“It’s great to see her hard work paying off,” Dollar Bay head coach Ben Tampas said. “She was conference MVP back in 2014, but girls distance runners in the area have really excelled since then. She’s a night and day better runner now, and her times are steadily improving. I’m very proud of her putting together two great races and claiming a conference honor again.”

The U.P. Finals are June 3 at Kingsford.
