Team CC sweeps Marquette

HOUGHTON — Looking to remain unbeaten after coming into Saturday with a record of 13-0-1 on the season, the defending national champion Team Copper Country Tier II U18s won a pair of games over Marquette Fox Motors, 8-0 and 7-3, at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

In the opener, Team CC struck three times in the first period to set the tone for the game.

Calumet’s Josh Vandenburg opened the scoring just 4:31 in. Hancock’s Teddy Perrault scored the second goal 4:04 later. Just 1:11 after Perrault, Houghton’s Kevin Bostwick struck.

In the second period, Houghton’s Taavi Rajala struck at 5:07, giving him two points in the game.

“Taavi Rajala had a great weekend,” said Team CC coach Micah Stipech. “He used his size and his deadly wrist shot.”

Hancock’s Bryce Randell scored with 25 seconds left in the middle frame.

In the third, Houghton’s Dawson McKay struck twice as part of a three-goal frame, putting the game out of reach. Hancock’s Austin Salani added a tally in between McKay’s pair.

In the second game, Calumet’s Brent Loukus scored twice at the start of the first and second periods. His second tally set off a five-goal period for Team CC that also saw goals from Calumet’s Gabe Coppo, Randell, Houghton’s Brendan Erickson and Hancock’s Colton Salani.

The elder Salani brother scored again in the third to put the game out of reach.

Hancock’s Teddy Randell picked up four assists on the day as well.

Team CC will be home again next weekend when they play host to the Minnesota Northern Wings and Green Bay for four home games before spending a month on the road.
