L’Anse gets 4-set win over rival Baraga
BARAGA –The L’Anse Purple Hornets earned a four-set win over the Baraga Vikings Monday in a nonconference match at Baraga.
“I thought it was a good overall team win with a few girls stepping up when it was absolutely necessary,” L’Anse head coach Callie Budweg said of her team’s 16-25, 25-16, 25-22, 26-24 win. “I think what it comes down to is that my girls get “gun-shy.” We have all the ammunition we need, but when it comes to game time, we don’t utilize all the power and strength that we truly have.
“I’m starting to look into the next season and hoping that my girls utilize these learning lessons to just strengthen the ammunition for next year.”
Junior setter Mandy Gransell had a career-high 22 assists and four aces for L’Anse.
“Lately I’ve really been looking to Mandy as my go-to girl,” Budweg said. “She’s so versatile and has played multiple roles on this team already.”
Junior middles Haley Nankervis recorded nine kills, and Josie Rice tallied six kills.
“Those two girls have been working hard all season,” Budweg said, “and now during this second half of the year it’s finally showing.”
Senior libber Stella Tortolini had nine digs.
Next, L’Anse hosts Ontonagon on Thursday.
