Poll: Hancock set to face WIC in major West-PAC showdown
The Hancock Bulldogs retain their No. 5 ranking in the Big Five in the Week 5 UPSSA football poll. Hancock is coming off a 56-32 win over the Gwinn Modeltowners, securing Hancock’s playoff berth.
The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes and L’Anse Purple Hornets each earned honorable mention in the Little Five poll.
On Friday, Hancock (4-1) will host the West Iron County Wykons (6-1, 5-0) to decide the West-PAC title. A WIC win would secure the conference title, while a Hancock victory would put them in the lead with another conference matchup with the Houghton Gremlins in the season finale.
LL-H is another local team with a major conference matchup this week. LL-H (3-3, 2-1) heads to Norway (6-1, 2-1) on Friday and can secure the Mid Eastern conference title with a win. The Lakes are on a three-game winning streak, while Norway is coming off a 28-14 loss to the Newberry Indians.
Similar to LL-H, other local schools look to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Calumet Copper Kings (4-3, 3-3), coming off a 22-14 win over L’Anse, hosts the Gogebic Miners on Friday. Gogebic is coming off a 26-7 win over L’Anse and a 14-0 victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.
L’Anse (4-3, 3-2) is hoping to stop a two-game skid with a trip to the Northland Pines Eagles (1-7, 1-5). L’Anse closes the season with a trip to WIC.
The Houghton Gremlins(1-6, 1-4) have allowed just 19 points in the last three weeks and will take its stifling defense to Hurley (4-3, 3-3).
In eight-person football, the Ontonagon Gladiators (4-2, 3-2) can secure a playoff berth with a win over the Forest Park Trojans Friday in Ontonagon. The Gladiators defeated Bear Lake 80-0 in Brimley.
