Prep volleyball: Calumet sweeps LL-H

LAKE LINDEN — In a matchup of the two reigning conference champions, the Calumet Copper Kings defeated the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-14) Thursday in Lake Linden.

Calumet clinched the West-PAC volleyball title on Tuesday with a win over Houghton, while LL-H (16-7-3, 7-0) has won the last seven Copper Country conference titles and is heavily favored to make it eight in a row.

Calumet senior Lea Bjorn led the way with 15 kills, while Celia Kiilunen added five kills and Brea Johnson had 19 assists. Defensively, Amber Johnson recorded 20 digs.

Maija Codere paced LL-H with seven kills, and Laura Lyons had 18 assists. Joslynn Perala tallied 18 digs.

“Not a bad match for us tonight. We kept it tight for the most part,” LL-H head coach Maureen Schick said. “We just don’t have that killer hitter who can put the ball away, and it makes it hard when we can’t end a rally early.

“I thought we served well in the sense that they struggled with passing against us.”

Next, LL-H hosts Watersmeet and Dollar Bay in a triangular today. Calumet welcomes Hancock in a regular season finale Tuesday.
