Prep volleyball: Houghton, Calumet secure victories

LAKE LINDEN — The Houghton Gremlins rallied to sweep the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes in a nonconference match Thursday in Lake Linden.

In the third set, LL-H led 20-13 before the Gremlins rallied with a 12-1 run to close the set and secure a sweep (25-22, 25-16, 25-21).

“A decent match for us,” LL-H head coach Maureen Schick said, “but we still haven’t found a way to beat the bigger schools. That team voice or the killer instinct is just not there. We don’t have the same firepower that Houghton does, but at times we played right with them.”

Kendra Monette and Jada Markham each recorded six kills for Houghton. Monette added 11 digs, and Markham also had two aces. Harlee Froberg chipped in with four kills, and Kiley Farrey tallied four kills and eight digs. Deja Brule recorded five kills; Mackenzie Klein added 15 assists; Madi Dillinger finished with 22 digs.

For LL-H, Erin Seppala had six kills and Mariah Willmer and Maija Coder each tallied five kills. Laura Lyons dished out 20 assists. Defensively, Joslynn Perala led the way with 19 digs.

Next, Houghton heads to the Suttons Bay Invite, while LL-H goes to the Ironwood-Hurley tournament on the same day.
