Finlandia women finish in tie with St. Norbert

HANCOCK — The game resembled a rollercoaster as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team (1-3-1, 1-2-1 NCHA) took a 4-4 overtime tie with St. Norbert (3-2-1, 3-0-1 NCHA), Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. 

St. Norbert drew first blood scoring at the 7:03 mark. Just under a minute later, senior Sierra Meiners netted a goal to make it 1-1.

With 4:45 gone in the second period, sophomore Kait Ryynanen took advantage of a Green Knight mistake. She fired a pass to Meiners who score on the left side. That made it 2-1.

At the 6:02 mark, SNC score to tie it at 2-2. With 6:53 to go in the second, freshman Hannah Tormanen forced a turnover at the red line. She went the distance and won her one-on-one to make it 3-2.

St. Norbert would score twice in five minutes to lead 4-3 with 19 minutes to go in the game. At the 5:07 mark, Tormanen score on a pass from sophomore Bella Abear to knot it at 4-4.

In the last three minutes, there were a total of three blocked shots and the game went into overtime. With two minutes gone in OT, Meiners fired a shot that was knocked away. Sophomore Annah Smiddy had four saves in the period to earn the tie.

Freshman Abby Kolek and junior Natasha Kern had 11 and nine wins, respectively, on face-offs. Smiddy finished with 47 saves.

Finlandia hits the road, Friday, taking on Lake Forest. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EST.
