Boys roundup: L’Anse, Jeffers get wins

BARAGA — The L’Anse Purple Hornets had three players in double-digits as they went on the road and defeated Baraga 57-44 in a nonconference matchup.

Alec Rajala and Reese Waara each had 12 points and Zach Sanregret chipped in with 11. Rajala also had 14 rebounds for a double-double and five steals. Sanregret grabbed eight rebounds, had seven assists and recorded six steals, and Waara had seven rebounds and six assists.

“Lots of kids stepped up big tonight, and it is nice to see the improvements every week,” L’Anse coach Kyle Koski said.

L’Anse was able to jump out to a 12-6 lead in the first quarter by pressing full court to create turnovers. The Purple Hornets built their lead by attacking Baraga’s 2-3 zone.

The Vikings were led by Zack Sackett with 12 points and Colton Lindemann with 11.

Next up L’Anse (2-9) hosts Hancock on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Baraga (1-10) welcomes Dollar Bay on the same day.

REPUBLIC — Jeffers (6-5, 4-4) used a 27-14 first-half lead to narrowly defeat Republic-Michigamme 49-43 in a Copper Mountain Conference matchup Tuesday in Republic. Carson Turner led the way with 17 points and Brett Hill added 16. The Jets went to the free throw line 24 times, knocking down 20, while R-M (3-7, 2-6) was just 2-7.

Next up Jeffers hosts Ewen-Trout Creek Friday at 7:20 p.m.

ISHPEMING — Houghton’s Brad Sirard had 26 points to lead all scorers, but it wasn’t enough as Houghton (5-7) went on he road and fell to Ishpeming 70-48 Tuesday in a nonleague contest.

Ishpeming (7-3) jumped out to a 43-18 lead at the half to coast to a victory. Houghton outscored the Hematites 30-27 in the second half, but by then the deficit was too much to overcome.

Both teams were perfect at the line with Houghton going 5-5 and Ishpeming making 11-11.

Next up Houghton travels to Jeffers on Tuesday at 7:20 p.m.

BESSEMER — Bessemer broke a two-game losing streak with a 79-29 nonconference win over Hancock Tuesday night in Bessemer.

Tyler Busch led the Speedboys with 21 points. Brayden Tomes had 11 and Jared Janczak scored 10.

“Tyler had a good night,” Bessemer coach Richard Matrella said. “He did a lot of his damage on the offensive boards and he hit a lot of jump shots, too. Jared Janczak played a real good game.”

Devin Raasio led Hancock with 14 points.

Bessemer (7-5, 6-4) hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell Friday. Hancock (2-7) hosts West Iron County tonight.
