Girls basketball roundup: No. 2 Chassell cruises; Baraga wins 5th straight; DB wins 1st game

CHASSELL — The No. 2 Chassell Panthers used a 20-1 run to start the game to defeat the Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals 66-27 Friday in Chassell for a Copper Mountain Conference victory.

Chassell’s Milly Allen led the way with 16 points, while Sydney Danison added 15 and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Jenna Pietila finished with 10 points. 

The Panthers (8-1, 7-0) led 20-1 after the first quarter and took a 36-10 halftime lead to put the outcome out of doubt. 

Next, Chassell hosts Jeffers (5-0 Copper Mountain Conference) on Tuesday in a matchup of undefeated conference teams. W-M (4-5, 2-4) heads to Ewen-Trout Creek on the same day.

BARAGA — After losing the first four games to start the season, the Baraga Vikings have now won five straight after a 58-22 Copper Mountain Conference win over the Bessemer Speedgirls Friday in Baraga. 

“The girls have really come together as a team,” Baraga coach Tom Goodreau said. “We have stressed team goals over individual accomplishments all season and the girls have finally embraced it. Each girl understands her role and it shows. One game she may be needed to score, the next game she may be off and plays great defense. Total team effort. It all clicked tonight.”

Allison Durant led the Vikings (5-4, 5-2) with 20 points, and Erin Kamarainen added 13 points. 

Baraga allowed just 10 first-half points to Bessemer (4-5, 3-4) as the Vikings took a 29-10 lead into halftime. 

Next, Baraga will look for its sixth win in a row when the Vikings to Republic-Michigamme on Tuesday. Baraga won the first matchup, 40-16 on Jan. 9.

DOLLAR BAY — The Dollar Bay Blue Bolts captured their first win of the season Friday, defeating the Republic-Michigamme Hawks 44-37 in Dollar Bay.

Emma Stout paced the winners with 15 points, while Bailey Poyhonen had 10.

Dollar Bay trailed 22-17 at the half but used a 13-4 third-quarter scoring advantage to take a 30-26 leadinto the fourth quarter.

The Blue Bolts converted 9 of 17 free throws in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

R-M (0-8, 0-5) was just 6 of 21 at the free-throw line for the game.

Next, Dollar Bay (1-7, 1-5) hosts Lake Linden-Hubbell on Tuesday.
