Houghton swim teams sweep Westwood

WESTWOOD — The Houghton boys and girls swim teams both defeated Westwood on Tuesday. The girls won 129-53 and the boys were victorious by a score of 112-53.

For the girls, Mikayla Sague took first in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle, and Tessa Meyer won the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke. Katie Jaszczak finished first in the 100 Fly, Samantha Olson was first in the 500 Freestyle and Olivia Witting won the 100 Breaststroke.

“The girls had a solid meet and I was happy for Katie Jaszczak and Irene Ra because they were able to qualify for Finals in a few events,” coach Erik Johnson said. “Beyond that, Mikayla Sague had an outstanding meet for just coming back from being sick. A lot of kids showed their toughness by battling through various illnesses.”

For the boys, Leo Wheeler was first in the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle, Kevin Beaghan won the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke and Colton Haataja was victorious in the 50 Freestyle and the 100 Freestyle. Sam Fang won the 100 Fly and Leif Odegard was first in the 100 Backstroke.

“The boys had a solid meet as well,” Johnson said. “Kevin Beaghan really stood out both for his improvements in the pool and doing it while fighting through a cold. Leif Odegard had another great meet and looked solid in the backstroke.”
