Houghton-Hancock wins state ski title

BELLAIRE — The Houghton-Hancock girls ski team edged Notre Dame prep 84-88 to take home first place in the MHSAA Division 2 state finals Monday at Schuss Mountain in Bellaire.

The team was down by four points after the first slalom race, but then made a comeback in the afternoon events.

Allyson Fenton (53.59) took fifth in the Giant Slalom, followed by teammate Katherine Jarvis (53.79) in sixth. Miren Unciti finished 25th with a time of 57.08, and Lydia Salmi was 30th in 57.78. Shelly Chu was 50th (1:02.22), and Rachel Sears was 56th (1:04.10).

Fenton also led the Gremlins in the Women’s Slalom finishing sixth (1:07.30), followed by Jarvis in seventh (1:07.59), Unciti in 19th (1:13.02), Salmi in 21st (1:14.08), Isabelle Cleary in 44th (1:21.32) and Chu in 50th (1:23.82).
