Gladiators blank Rapid River, 38-0

RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River Rockets opened their football season on a positive note Friday night as they blanked the Ontonagon Gladiators 38-0 in an eight-player contest.

Rapid River scored on its first play from scrimmage on Brent Lundquist’s 70-yard pass to Tyler Sundling and made it 14-0 on Sundling’s 70-yard run late in the first quarter.

Gunnar Larson’s 10-yard run raised the count to 22-0 early in the second stanza and Lundquist added a 1-yard TD run for a 30-point cushion nine seconds before halftime in the Great Lakes Eight Conference cross-over game.

Sundling concluded the scoring a 28-yard dash early in the fourth.

“We talked to the kids about working hard and being coachable,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “Things went a little rough in our scrimmage and our coaching staff did a nice job cleaning things up. They did a nice job getting the kids ready.

The Rockets rushed for 350 yards. Sundling ran 15 times for 205 and Larson had 62 on 10 carries. Lundquist was 6-of-12 passing for 164 yards and two interceptions.
