Panthers, Vikings both earn victories

Panthers shuts down Lakes on road, 54-28

LAKE LINDEN — Despite a stronger second half than their first, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes girls basketball team struggled to keep up with Ewen-Trout Creek’s Elise Besonen and Abbe LeGault, who combined for 29 points as the Panthers defeated the Lakes on the road, 54-28, Friday night at the Lake Linden-Hubbell Gym.

The Panthers took control in the first eight minutes of play as they used six points from LeGault to jump out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter.

From there, Ewen near looked back as LeGault continued to shoot well in the second quarter and Gracie Witt added four points as well. The Panthers led 29-13 at the half.

In the second half, the Lakes played better, but not overcome Besonen as she came alive, scoring 13 of her game-high 15 points.

Mackenzie LePage led the Lakes with seven points on the night.

Baraga defeats Bessemer at home, 66-15

BARAGA — While the Baraga Vikings are still a young squad, when things click, they can go very right. Friday, the Vikings scored 38 points in the first half as they worked their way to a 66-15 win over the visiting Bessemer Speedgirls.

“Our team came out fired up tonight, with great energy,” said Vikings coach Tom Goodreau. “They had a size advantage on us at every position. We had to utilize our quickness to combat that size.”

The Vikings scored 21 points in the opening quarter thanks to a pair of threes from Rylie Koskinen and one from Erin Kamarainen. In the second, Reide Osterman put up seven points to help spark a 17-point effort.

Kamarainen then picked up another seven points in the second half on her way to a game-high 18.

“Our outside shooting and fast break were working well tonight,” said Goodreau. “It was a total team win.”

Koskinen added 15 points.

Jaylyne Lindemann had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
