Girls roundup: Calumet, Baraga, Lake Linden earn wins

Calumet 68, Houghton 50

CALUMET — The Calumet Copper Kings girls basketball team jumped all over the Houghton Gremlins Monday night, outscoring them 19-8 in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Copper Kings the, did nearly the same thing to start the second half, outscoring the Gremlins, 20-11.

The Copper Kings remained in the driver’s seat from there, earning a 68-50 victory at home.

Celia Kiilunen had a big night for the Copper Kings, scoring a team-high 19 points on the night.

The Gremlins did the best they could to keep up with the potent Calumet attack as Ellen Trewhella scored a game-high 26 points. Cassie Ryynanen also had a strong night with 15 points.

Elli Djerf picked up 18 points for the Copper Kings, including a pair of threes.

Baraga 46, Ewen-Trout Creek 38

EWEN — The Baraga Vikings girls basketball team pulled ahead of the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers and stayed there, earning a win on Monday, 46-38, on the road.

A late surge and sound free throws from the Vikings are what allow them to come away with the win.

“Tough game tonight,” said Baraga coach Tom Goodreau. “Ewen is well-coached team with a lot of size and really good guard play. Both defenses were hustling and really playing well.

“We went on a run in the third and were able to hit some free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.”

Abbe LeGault lead Ewen-Trout Creek with 10 points with four coming at the free throw line and three layups inside the paint.

Martina Jahfetson put up 12 points for the Vikings with three two-point shots and six free throws.

Lake Linden-Hubbell 55, Republic-Michigamme 33

REPUBLIC — The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes used a strong first half and a good fourth quarter to earn a 55-33 win over the host Republic-Michigamme Hawks Monday.

After a quiet first half with four points, and seven through three quarter, Mackenzie LePage scored 14 in the fourth as part of her game-high 19. Joslynn Perala added two threes and 12 points as well.

The Lakes led 28-19 at the half and then racked up 19 more points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
