M&M Powersports opens district tournament with loss

Daily Mining Gazette/Daver Karnosky M&M Powersports’ Chad Isaacson prepares to shoot from the right circle during a game against Ontonagon Friday at the Houghton County Arena. He scored on the shot.

HANCOCK — In their opening game of the 12B district tournament at the Houghton County Arena, M&M Powersports, the CCJHA representative for the weekend, jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period. While they got the start they wanted, M&M could not hang to it in end, falling in overtime to Ontonagon, 5-4.

Aydan Miles did most of the damage for Ontonagon, scoring four goals and adding an assist over the course of the contest.

“Our boys skated hard and Ontonagon skated hard,” said M&M coach John Asiala. “Their No. 71 (Miles) is a good hockey player.”

M&M led 4-2 with 2:40 left when Ontonagon coach Donald Miles called a time out. Just 33 seconds later, Trius Namowicz cut the lead to 4-3 when his shot from the left side of the high slot found its way over the shoulder of M&M goaltender David Archambeau.

Aydan Miles had two or three good looks after that, the first broken up by an M&M defender and another that Archambeau blocked away. His third look with 7.1 seconds left found its way past Archambeau from in close.

In overtime, Aydan Miles again attacked the offensive zone, but could not find room to work for much of the first minute. However, 49 seconds in, he did create some separation and wired a wrist shot that found the net to give Ontonagon a reason to storm the ice in celebration.

M&M struck first just 4:29 into the contest when Chad Isaacson skated down the right boards and into the bottom of the right circle before firing a wrist shot that snuck through Karson Clinesmith.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of M&M for the next six minutes, mainly due to the goaltending of Clinesmith, who stopped Brogan Turner and Ethan Anderson in sequence and then later made another stop on Cody Turner.

Cody Turner did extend M&M’s lead at 10:44 when he skated through the left circle and flung a wrist shot that climbed up over Clinesmith’s glove and into the net.

Ontonagon responded a 2:06 later when Aydan Miles stole the puck from an M&M defender and beat Archambeau over the left shoulder.

Just 12 seconds later, Brogan Turner regained the two-goal advantage for M&M.

The game remained 3-1 in favor of the home team until the 7:51 mark of the second period when Aydan Miles struck again from in the slot.

In the middle frame, M&M struggled to get much going offensively the way they had in the first.

“Our boys were a little bit lethargic in the second,” said Asiala. “It happens. It’s PeeWee hockey.”

M&M regained some breathing room at 7:48 of the third when Elliot Asiala backhanded a rebound past Clinesmith after the Ontonagon netminder made the first save on a shot from Anders Juntti.

Both teams have two more games Saturday in two-division round robin opening round to determine which two teams from each division will play in the semifinals Sunday morning.

Despite the opening loss, John Asiala admitted that his team enjoyed having the opportunity to play in front of their parents, grandparents and friends by having the tournament at home.

“I think they had a lot of fun,” said John Asiala. “Hopefully they learned something and will continue to play tomorrow.”
