Finlandia softball season ends

ALFRED, N.Y. – It was a heartbreaking defeat as the Finlandia University softball team (11-24) lost 3-2 on day two of the ACAA Championships, Sunday morning at Harrington Field.

In the third inning, junior Harlie Caster doubled and moved to third when a ball hit by freshman Rheanna Bain was misplayed. Junior Makenna Gorham singled to score Caster and push Bain to second.

Junior Kassandra Avila singled to plate Bain and make it 2-0. Alfred State scored twice in the fourth inning to make it 2-2.

The Lions loaded the bases with one out in the sixth inning. The Pioneers got the next two batters out to escape. ASC scored in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.

For Finlandia, Avila, Caster and Gorham had two hits each. Junior Denia Bent (6-9) gave up three hits and one run in 1.3 innings.

For Alfred State, Madison Papaj and Jamie Parente had two hits each. Brittany Fisher (7-9) gave up nine hits, two runs with none earned, walked two and struck out two in seven innings.

Earning All-Tournament honors was Avila, sophomore Kyndell Coffman and Gorham.

Finlandia has finished the 2019 season.
