Jets strong, but drop two more to Lakes

SOUTH RANGE — Looking to bounce back from a rough doubleheader Wednesday, the Jeffers Jets softball team played much better Thursday. Unfortunately for the hosts, the Lakes still found a way to win both games, 8-4 and 6-5.

In the opener, the Lakes’ Mackenzie Lepage racked up eight strikeouts on the mound to keep the Jets from building much momentum. She was also helped out offensively by the efforts of Megan Corrigan, who belted two triples and a double and Kali DeMars, who had an inside-the-park home run and a double.

Melissa Wagner also a strong game with a double and a single.

Alia Palosaari had three singles to drive the Jets’ offense. Madi Holombo also picked up a hit.

In the nightcap, Lepage was strong again, racking nine strikeouts.

Corrigan singled three times over the course of hte game. Mckenna Keranen added two singles as well. Caitlyn Zerbst had a timely double.

Holombo had an inside-the-park home run for the Jets, sparking the hosts’ offense.

Myra Pennala cracked a double and Linnae Heinonen had both a single and a double.

The Jets did have the tying run on third base late in the contest, but could not even things before the final out was recorded. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Tuukka Rask posted his seventh career playoff shutout, and the Boston Bruins swept the Carolina Hurricanes out of the Eastern Conference final, winning 4-0 on Thursday night to reach their third Stanley Cup Final in nine years.

Rask made 24 saves in his second straight series-clinching shutout. Patrice Bergeron scored two goals, David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists and Brad Marchand added an empty-netter. Both Bergeron and Pastrnak scored on second-period power plays.

The Bruins won their seventh straight postseason game — their longest playoff winning streak in nearly half a century — to return to the Cup final after winning it in 2011 and losing to Chicago two years later.

On its longest postseason win streak since reeling off nine straight in 1972, Boston earned a break before taking on the West winner. San Jose leads its series with St. Louis 2-1 heading into Game 4 Friday night.
