Lions fall in final Game

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Senior Joey Krug had three hits and added to the record book as the Finlandia University baseball team (4-32, 1-23 WIAC) lost 6-3 and 20-2 to #38 UW-La Crosse (25-13, 19-5 WIAC), Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park.

In game one, UW-La Crosse was not able to pull away from Finlandia. After six innings, the Eagles led 4-0.

In the seventh, junior Jean Pimentel singled and stole second for the Lions. Senior Danny Logan struck out but the pitch went wide allowing him to reach first and move Pimentel to third.

Junior Nik Geiser singled to score Pimentel and move Logan to second. Following an out, junior Patrick Coles ripped a double to left field to clear the bases to make it 4-3.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to go up by three. In the seventh, Finlandia refused to quit loading the bases with two outs. A fielder’s choice ended the game.

For Finlandia, Krug had two hits. Junior Ashton Knutson (2-6) gave up 14 hits, six runs, five earned, walked two and struck out four in eight innings.

For La Crosse, Zach Pronschinske (5-1) gave up eight hits, three runs and struck out 12 in nine innings.

In the night cap, UWL took an early 2-0 lead after two innings. In the third inning, sophomore Sawyer Murrell singled and moved to third off a hit by Coles. Junior Brian Doyle grounded out to score Murrell to make it 2-1.

UW-La Crosse scored seven in the bottom of the third to effectively seal the game. In the sixth inning, Krug hit his fifth homer of the season to tie the single season record. It was the 12th of his career breaking the mark of 11 by Shawn Wickersheim (2005-08).

For Finlandia, Krug (1-6) gave up eight hits, nine runs, walked three and struck out three in 2.3 innings.

For La Crosse, James Witt (2-0) gave up four hits, two runs and struck out eight in six innings.

Finlandia has finished the 2019 season.
