Coca Cola takes both ends of doubleheader Wednesday

Jamie Glenn/Daily Mining Gazette Coca Cola’s Delaney Heinonen delivers a pitch during a game against Northern Michigan Wednesday during Copper Country Women’s Fastpitch Softball League action in Chassell.

CHASSELL — Hot temperatures helped Coca Cola’s hot bats in a pair of victories over Northern Michigan Landbrokers in Copper Country Woman’s Fastpitch Softball play on Wednesday at Chassell Field. Coca Cola won 12-4 and 7-1 on the night.

Coca Cola took advantage of some slow returns with seven runs in the first two innings.

Emilie Scholie led off with a single. Two batters later, Tarynn Brey walked. Both scored during ensuing at bats by Delaney Heinonen and Grace Brunet.

In the second, Kaydence Kilpela led off with a walk. Krista Kela then singled and Ellie Heinonen reached on a fielder’s choice. Josie Hembroff was then hit by a pitch, bringing Kilpela in. Kela, Heinonen and Hembroff all later scored. Kaisa Salani walked and later scored on a sacrifice by Delaney Heinonen.

“We had most of our team tonight, and we had Delaney Heinonen back, so that was a big thing for us,” said Coca Cola manager Gary Scholie. “We hit the ball, so we came out victorious.

“We didn’t really have any super big hits, but we just had a lot of base hits. (We) hit the ball and got a few girls walked and moved them around.”

Coca Cola’s bats continued to be strong as Kilpela singled to lead off the third. Kela was then hit by a pitch. Hembroff was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Emilie Scholie reached on an error. All four scored, making it 11-0 in their favor.

Momentum took a slight shift in the fourth with Northern Michigan’s Isabelle Cleary getting a single and later stealing her way home. Northern Michigan added one more run in the inning.

They then added two more runs in the fifth.

“It was hot, can’t get around that,” said Northern Michigan shortstop Anna Gaffney. “Everyone kind of was pretty sweaty. Our bats were a little late to the party, but we held with them (Coca Cola) as best as we could.

“They got a few early on. We had a couple of runs in the end and our energy levels came up (because) we’re late bloomers.”

Hembroff walked and later scored on an error to put up the final run for Coca Cola.

Gaffney admitted that she and her teammates needed to work on some simple issues in batting in the heat.

“(We need to be) keeping our eyes on the ball,” she said. “A lot of our girls are pulling their heads, but the heat is getting to them, so we’re just going to focus on that and do it quick.

“We didn’t have any rainouts, so I don’t think we have any (games) next week. We’re going to prepare by making some girls hit the ball and come ready to play.”

In the nightcap, Coca Cola’s bats came alive in the second inning when they scored three runs. Kela and Ellie Heinonen scored two of those three runs.

In the fourth, Hembroff, Emilie Scholie, and Brey all reached base and later scored. In the sixth, Scholie walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Salani.

The only answer from Northern Michigan in the contest came in the third inning from Elisa Isaacson who took first base and stole bases to home plate.
