Lakes girls take UP title for third straight year

ake Linden-Hubbell girls kept their grip on the Upper Peninsula Division 3 track title here Saturday, winning for the third consecutive year with 112 points.

They were followed by North Dickinson 62 and Mid Peninsula 56.

LL-H grabbed the top three spots in pole vault. Freshman Camaryn Crouch won at nine feet, edging senior Mackenzie LePage on a tie-breaker. Junior Megan Corrigan placed third (8-0).

Senior Mariah Willmer took the 800-meter run in a season-best two minutes 28.15 seconds, helped the winning 1600 relay (4:26.17) and was runner-up in the 400 (1:03.55) and long jump (14-7 1/4).

“I started the way I like to (in the 800),” said Willmer, who hopes to do track at Michigan Tech next season. “I usually go out real hard. It definitely feels like a sprint even though it’s a mid-distance race. I’m not a super quick sprinter, but I have the endurance to hold a fast pace.”

Junior Jamie Hendrickson, who also helped the 1600 relay, won high jump (5-0) for the third straight year.

“I was kind of hoping to go higher, but I’m still happy with that,” said Hendrickson, who has gone as high as 5-4 this year. “Much of the key to success is speed training, yet so much of it is mental.”

Junior Sienna Anderson placed second in the 100 hurdles (17.78) and classmate Joslyn Perala took third in the 100 (13.64) and helped the Lakes take second in the sprint relays.

Chassell opened with a victory in the 3200 relay (10:36.94) and took third in the 1600 relay (4:31.16).

Senior Lela Rautiola and freshman Paige Sleeman helped both relays, with Rautiola taking second in the 3200 (12:44) and Sleeman third in the 800 (2:33.41).

Ontonagon senior Holly Jo Wardzynski set a U.P. and school record in discus at 116-3, two inches better than the previous U.P. record by Sydnie Petrie of BR-H in 2013.

“I was making sure I wasn’t over-thinking anything,” said Wardzynski, a Bay College basketball recruit. “I just tried to relax. My speed helped me a lot. I also worked on my release and it finally worked today. I’m just happy I finally did it. I’m thankful for everyone who helped me and this was the perfect time to do it.”

Sophomore Nicole Lukkari was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (51.77) and the Gladiators took third in the 400 relay (55.14).

Baraga sophomore Jaylyn Lindemann captured shot put (31-3 1/2) and placed third in discus (93-2).

Marquette gained its eight D-1 title in nine years, edging defending champion Negaunee 106-100. Third-place Sault Ste. Marie collected 74 points.

Houghton senior Anabel Needham was runner-up to Negaunee junior Emily Paupore in the 1600. Paupore was clocked in a season-best 5:16.79, with Needham finishing in a school-record 5:18.67.

“Sub-5:20 was my goal and I thought I did awesome,’ said Needham. “Emily and I ran real even splits which helped a lot. I try to start my kick near the end of the third lap which really helps give me some momentum going into the fourth lap. I’ve been waiting for this all of this season and last season. It really felt good to get it today.”

Houghton junior Lily Baker copped pole vault (9-0) and sophomore Lillian Williston was third in shot put (32-1) and discus (104-11).

Calumet sophomore Emma Gariepy, Menominee freshman Anna Nerat and Westwood junior Tessa Leece finished in a tie for second in high jump (4-8) and Copper Kings’ senior Mackenzie Peters took third in 100 hurdles (17.18).

Sault sophomore Emily McLean uncorked a U.P. and school-record toss of 39-2 in shot put, topping her previous U.P. record (38-1 1/2) and matching her effort in the regional May 16 in Escanaba.

St. Ignace won for the third straight time in D-2 with 130 points, followed by Ishpeming 61 and Bark River-Harris 54.

Hancock freshmen Sloane Driscoll and Kali Chynoweth shared runner-up honors in pole vault (7-0) and junior Ellie Sturos placed third in the 1600 (5:50.79). Both helped the Bulldogs take second in the 1600 (4:31.7) and 3200 relay (11:12.05).

L’Anse freshman Kyra Sipe was runner-up in the 200 (27.36) and third in the 100 (13.35).

Gwinn set a U.P. record in the 400 relay (52.34), topping the nine-year-old mark by Manistique by .02 second.
