Chassell advances, South Range wins in Over 50 softball playoffs

TAPIOLA — Chassell advanced to the winners bracket in the Over 50 Softball League playoffs with a win over Houghton Thursday.

Nick Kosczykowski singled in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning for a 6-5 win.

The two teams battled on even terms up to that point as Chassell’s Steve Giddings outdueled Houghton’s Steve Dunstan.

Jim LaChance, Jay LeClaire, Pat Duguay and Nick Lindemann all had two safeties for the winners.

Jed Pollard cracked out three hits for Houghton, with Jim Perron, Dave Kamarand and Rick Niemi collecting two each.

In the other game, South Range eliminated Tapiola by a 6-1 score as winning pitcher Joe Rossi gave up just four hits. Losing chucker Len Juntunen allowed just nine raps.

Dave Fehringer and Dick Franti picked up two hits each for Range.

Scott Hall had two hits for Tapiola.

Houghton and South Range will meet in a loser’s bracket game at 7 p.m. Monday.

The winner of that game will meet Chassell next Thursday for the title.
