HOUGHTON – The Michigan Tech Huskies are on a winning roll.

They did it again on Saturday as they defeated the Northwood University Timberwolves 93-59.

Saturday’s win was the fourth in a row for the Huskies (6-2, 2-0 GLIAC).

On Thursday night, they opened up GLIAC play with a 79-57 victory against Saginaw Valley.

Michigan Tech head coach was pleased with the win and with the way this season is taking shape.

“We have a good team and when we screen, move and share the basketball good things happen,” he said. “I feel like we are getting some traction. The guys have played hard all season. We are better defensively and we have to continue to be strong. (Today) I thought there was some exceptional play all the way around.”

History was made in five minutes into the second half when MTU senior Kyle Monroe sunk his 2,000th career point. The Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, native became just the fourth player in the school’s history to reach 2,000 points.

“The only thing I can say is that I have been blessed with such good teammates since I have been here,” Monroe said. “From my freshman year till now, I’ve just been lucky to have the opportunity to score so much.”

Monroe was appropriately the Huskies top scorer with 22 points. He ended the afternoon with 2,004 career points. With more than 20 games to go on the season, Monroe could top Tech basketball’s all time scoring mark of 2,360 points set by Larry Grimes (1968-72) more than 45 years ago.

“A huge milestone is 1,000 points and Kyle has double that at 2,000. We are really proud of him,” Luke said. ” Kyle is a very knowledgeable player and has such a basketball IQ that he is a willing passer. He will pass just as much as he wants to shoot. Credit goes to him and the skills he has to do what he has done.”

As for the game the Huskies and Timberwolves traded baskets in the opening minutes of the game and came a 13-13 tie with 13:17 to go in the first half. However, that was as close as the game would stay as the Huskies pushed out to a 24-14 leads at the 8:30 mark and eventually a 47-25 lead at half time.

Tech’s go-to play against the Timberwolves was the inside game. They poured in 58 of their 93 points in the paint. Huskies were routinely open under the basket for passes and easy off -the-glass points.

“We are trying to get inside points and outside scoring with the three-point shot,” Luke said. “If we don’t make a couple of three pointers, then we want to put it inside. That’s our rule and it worked well today. We have to continue to do that.”

The second half of Saturday’s game looked much like the first with the Huskies pulling away even further. At one point they led by 37 points. The Huskies shot 64.1 percent from the floor and 46. 7 percent past the three point line. Dawson Bilski followed Monroe in the scoring with 17 points. Also of note was the play of senior Tommy Lucas who had 13 assists on the weekend with no turnovers.

The Huskies host Finlandia at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
