Prep Basketball: Houghton girls spill Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming girls basketball team opened up its season Friday night against Houghton and it was an up-and-down kind of night for the Hematites.

Ishpeming trailed by four after the first quarter, but rallied in the second to take a 26-23 lead into the half. After a hard-fought third quarter where the Hematites emerged with a slim 39-37 lead, the Gremlins took control in the fourth to get a 49-45 win.

Ishpeming’s Madison Mead led all scorers with 21 points, while Maryellen Trewhella had 16 points for Houghton.

“Houghton came out of the gates fast on us,” Hematites head coach Ryan Reichel said. “They scored 18 in the first, but once we settled down, we were able to hold them to five in the second quarter. We exchanged leads throughout the game. Both teams played really hard-nosed for their first game of the season and I feel after it’s all said and done, both teams got better.”

Ishpeming travels to Kingsford Monday, while Houghton hosts L’Anse Tuesday.
