Prep Basketball: Gremlin girls slip past Ontonagon, 67-63

ONTONAGON — The Houghton Gremlins stayed one step ahead of the Ontonagon Gladiators and secured a 67-63 win on Thursday.

“We battled hard all evening,” said Houghton head coach Julie Filpus. “Ontonagon kept closing our small gaps. I would have liked to see our girls lock down better on defense, but we will enjoy the win.”

Paige DeForge had an impressive six 3-pointers. The last one went in as the Gremlins were up by one with just 20 seconds to go in the game.

“It was a huge shot,” Filpus said.

She added that Maryellen Trewhella played her most complete game of the year as she led the Gremlins scoring with 26 points.

The Vikings had four girls in double figures. Among them was leading scored Allison Durant with 18 points.

Despite the loss, LL-H head coach Jack Johnson was pleased with his girls’ effort.

“We had a strong start in the first to make it 14-12 , but we were unable to stay with the hot shooting Baraga Vikings,” he said. “I thought we played aggressive in the first and fourth quarter,. and we very well may have played our best basketball in the first six minutes. However, despite switching up between multiple defenses we were unable to stop them from behind the line.”
