Ski Tigers have strong race in CXC Cup

This past weekend, the Copper Country Ski Tigers competed in the Great Lakes Division last CXC Cup race of the season. With skiers racing in every race below the collegiate level, it was a busy two days.

Saturday featured the freestyle competitions. In the Men’s race 10K, Joe Wood placed fourtth in the U20 division and Mike Fraley placed fourth in the Men’s U18. In the boy’s 5K U16 race, Grant Fredrickson came in in eighth place with Cyrus Hamlin close behind in 10th and Quentin Niemi in 11th.

Following was the women’s 5K for the U20/U18/U16 racers. Autumn Eles took ninth place and Kora Johnson took 10th for the U18 division while Ingrid Seagren placed third, Sage Resh-Chimner ninth, and Jaden Serafin 12th in the U16 race.

The U14 racers had a great day in both the boys and girls freestyle events. Drew Huotari, Birk Seagren, Illya Velat, Auggie Hamlin and Kalvin Kytta took the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth in the boy’s U14 2K race, respectively. Wells Huotari came in first in the boys’ U12 race.

On the girls’ side, Robin Kisiel came in second in the girl’s U14 race.

On Sunday, the classic races were held for all age groups. On the women’s side, Eles came in in fifth place and Johnson in 10th in the girl’s U18 race. In the U16 race, Ingrid Seagren placed third, Resh-Chimner fourth and Serafin 10th. Rounding out the girls’ races, Kisiel came in second and Emily Bow-Pearce third in the girls’ U14 race.

On the men’s side in the 10K race, Wood took seventh in the U20 and Fraley fifth in the U18. In the boys’ U16 race Grant Fredrickson again took eighth followed by Neimi in ninth place. For the under 14 boys, Seagren came in first place with Illya Velat in third, Kytta in fourth and Hamlin in fifth place. Lastly, Jerome Bow-Pearce came in first place in the U10 division.

Finally, Maria Velat took first place both days in the women’s adaptive ski races.

The Ski Tigers will travel to Traverse City for the Michigan High School Championships the last weekend of February.
