Yep named MTU tennis coach

HOUGHTON — Kristin Yep was named as the new head coach of the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Michigan Tech, athletic director Suzanne Sanregret announced Monday.

Yep was head coach of NCAA Div. III Whittier College (California) men’s and women’s tennis teams the last two seasons.

“I am pleased to welcome Kristin to Michigan Tech,” Sanregret said. “Throughout the interview she demonstrated not only the playing and coaching skills to lead our teams, but an enthusiasm to work with student-athletes and help them grow as athletes, students, and members of our community.”

Yep, who officially begins Feb. 10, said she’s looking forward to getting started.

“I’m honored to join Michigan Tech athletics as the new head coach of men’s and women’s tennis,” Yep said. “I’m very excited to be a Husky and to give the teams a positive collegiate athletics experience. Both programs have a lot of potential for growth with outstanding student-athletes.”

Yep brings a wealth of experience to Tech having coached at the collegiate level, as a teaching professional, and professional playing experience. Yep was named the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Coach of the Year. She began her collegiate coaching career as the men’s assistant coach at Whittier for the 2015 season before becoming the head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs in the summer of 2017.

Yep competed collegiately at Concordia University Irvine where she earned All-America accolades in both singles and doubles.Yep started out competing in Southern California juniors beginning at age 15, touring around Asia and North America to compete in International Tennis Federation juniors tournaments. She went on to establish an ITF junior world ranking of 700. Yep earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Sport Science in 2012 and completed her Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletic Administration in 2019 at Concordia University Irvine.
