Pair of blowouts kickoff 20th annual Durocher Tournament

STANTON — Superior National Bank-Stanton (SNB-Stanton) put on a power display and Dean Kangas-State Farm’s offense found steady production as both teams won in Friday’s doubleheader to kick off the 20th annual Leo Durocher Memorial Tournament at Stanton Field.

SNB-Stanton (3-1) hit three home runs en route to a 14-1 win against Twilight League foe Garnet Garage-Subway (2-2) in the tournament opener.

Dean Kangas-State Farm (1-3) put up five early runs on the way to a 10-0 victory over REL Inc.-Mohawk Technologies (2-2) in the other Twilight League matchup.

Stanton scored seven runs in the first inning to take early command against Garnet Garage-Subway. Stanton later had back-to-back home runs in the fourth inning by Cole Jepsen and Eli Luoma. Dax Durocher also homered.

Stanton pitching held Garnet Garage-Subway off rhythm for most of the day, ceding just one hit, a clean single by Brady Budweg. Garnet Garage-Subway batters struck out 14 times and walked three times.

Connor Hannon singled and scored twice. Erik Nettell doubled and singled. Jepsen doubled to go along with his home run. Carter Nettell doubled. Josh Koskela doubled and walked twice.

Dean Kangas-State Farm won scored five runs in the second for early momentum and never looked back.

Brian Juopperi had two singles for Dean Kangas-State Farm. Scott Wesa also had two singles. Travis Wesa, Brandon Teichman and Carson Turner also had base hits.

Teichman pitched for Dean Kangas-State Farm and surrendered two hits. He struck out six and walked a pair.

Four games are scheduled for Saturday with Channing facing Garnet Garage-Subway at 11 a.m. Negaunee Tri-City follows against Dean Kangas-State Farm at 1:30 p.m. Tri-City plays again versus REL Inc.-MT at 4 p.m. SNB-Stanton hosts Channing in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m.

The top two teams play in the championship at 2 p.m. Sunday. An old-timers game is at 11 a.m. Sunday.
