HOUGHTON — The Portage Lake Golf Course (PLGC) held a UPGA junior golf tournament this past Monday. With competitors in four different age groups, several local golfers had strong days with two of the four division winners coming from Houghton and another won by a golfer from Hancock.

Brady Schmierer (Houghton) shot a 3-over-par 75 to win the 16 & 17-year-old division. This is the second title for Brady Schmierer at PLGC this season. He also won the junior tournament held on June 23.

Finishing in second place was Matt Anderson from Marquette with a score of 84 and finishing in third place was Lincoln Sager from Marquette with an 86.

In the 14 & 15 division, Marino Pisani (Houghton) won the title with a score of 84. Caleb Beeman from Marquette was second place with a score of 91. Ryan Schmierer (Houghton) finished in third place with a 91.

In the 12 & 13 division, Jackson Sintkowski (Hancock) shot a nine-hole score of 46 to beat Ian Hong (Houghton) by two strokes. Third place went to Carter Campioni (Houghton) with a score of 49.

The 10 & 11-year-old title was won by Gavin Burcar (Marquette) with an impressive score of 43 in the nine-hole tournament. Eli Nutini (Negaunee) was second with a score of 48 and Max Aldrich (Hancock) was third with a score of 51.

The 8 & 9-year-old division was a close one. It was won by Emmett Hainault (Houghton) with a nine-hole score of 59, one stroke better than second place finisher was Anschel Gasser (Colorado) with a score of 60.

Finishing third was Mats Arko (Houghton) with a score of 64.

Portage Lake will be hosting a Couple’s Shamble this Saturday.

The PLGC Men’s Club Champ is August 1-2. The PLGC Bestball tournament will be held August 8 & 9. Junior Club Championship will take place Aug. 13.
