Football: BR-H blanks Purple Hornets, 28-0

L’ANSE — It proved to be a most frustrating night for the L’Anse Hornets on Friday night at a cold and wet Volunteer Field.

Visiting Bark River-Harris controlled the ball nearly 80 percent of the game en route to a 28-0 victory.

“Bark River took it to us right from the start,” LHS coach Mark Leaf said. “It seemed like they had the football all night. And when we would get the ball back, we would turn it over. Hats off to them.”

The Broncos used solid blocking to control the pigskin for all but 4:30 of the opening half in the Senior Night contest.

A pair of short touchdown runs by tailback Dylan Lippens, one each in the first and second periods, gave the visitors a 12-0 advantage.

L’Anse actually had decent field position in its first three possessions of the second half, getting the ball around its own 45.

But an interception and a fumble erased two opportunities, and a third one ended out of downs.

“We just couldn’t get anything going,” Leaf said. And their defense played real well.”

The Broncos scored once in the third quarter on a short run by Jerry Stein. They added a tack-on score in the waning minutes.

Flash Gagnon played a strong defensive game for the Hornets, finishing up with 13 tackles.

“He (Gagnon) played a very good game for us,” Leaf said.

Lippens led all rushers in the game with 124 yards in 22 carries.

The Hornets closed the regular season with a 1-4 record. They will now wait for their opponent in the playoffs.

“It could be one of two or three teams,” Leaf said. “It could be Mancelona or Harbor Springs; it will likely be a downstate team though.”

BR-Harris, closing with a 3-2 mark, plays in Division 8.
