No. 18 Huskies ride win streak, face No. 8 Falcons next

The No. 18 Michigan Tech Huskies slogged through a 10-day quarantine and kept their winning streak alive.

At seven games, the Huskies (8-3-1) look to add to the win streak as they visit No. 8 Bowling Green this weekend.

Puck drop is 7:07 p.m. today and Saturday.

Michigan Tech is riding on the momentum of three straight series sweeps, two of which came against struggling arch-rival Northern Michigan.

Bowling Green (14-4) is coming off a rare series sweep loss last weekend against Bemidji State. The Beavers also beat the Falcons on Jan. 8. BGSU’s other loss was Dec. 5 against Mercyhurst.

Bowling Green has outshot opponents 341-162 this season. The Falcons have outscored opponents 34-13.

BGSU’s largest goal differential by period is their 14-4 goals scored and allowed in the second period.

The Falcons are seventh in the country in goals per game with 3.83. The Huskies are tied for 40th at 2.23.

Tech is second in the country in goals allowed per game at 1.46. Bowling Green is fourth at 1.83. Minnesota State has the lowest at 1.00 goals allowed per game.

But now seems to be the right time the Huskies face a team as offensively powered as the Falcons. The Huskies have had their best offensive production and defensive play so far in January. Tech has scored a season-best three goals per game and allowed a season-low 0.50 goals per game.

The Falcons gave up five goals last weekend to the Beavers and three to Northern Michigan the weekend before.

The Huskies’ increased offensive production looks like it could be sustained. The team’s 23 assists each last month and this month is a sign the Huskies are consistently involved offensively and putting the puck in the right part of the ice at the right time.

The Huskies have 32 penalty minutes in four games this month, half of what they had through six games in December.

The power-play has also improved, jumping to 23.1% this month from 11.1% in December. The Huskies’ penalty kill dipped from 94.4% to 88.9%.

Tech’s goaltending has also been a strong point this season. Sophomore Blake Pietila and senior Mark Sinclair have shutouts under their belts.

Pietila has played eight games and has a .961 save percentage. The nation’s save percentage leader, Canisius’ Matt Ladd, has a .962 save percentage but has played two games.

Starting at $3.50/week.
