Tech women shoot past LSSU, 61-46

HOUGHTON — It was the tale of two halves for the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team as they downed the Lake Superior State University Lakers 61-46 Friday night at the Wood Gym.The first 20 minutes was a rough one for both teams while the Huskies dominated the last two quarters.

Neither the Huskies (4-1) nor the Lakers (4-1) could find a good rhythm on the floor to open the game.

We came out flat and had a slow start, ” said Michigan Tech head coach Sam Hoyt. “It was frustrating as we did not take care of the ball real well. We need to bring urgency to every game and every possession which I did not think we did in those first five minutes.”

While Michigan Tech won the first quarter 14-12, they trailed by as much as seven at around the 7 minute mark.

The Huskies lost the second quarter by a score of 8-7 but came out on top at the half with a score of 21-20.

“We defended well enough to be in the game, and that is something we hang our hats on,” said Hoyt. “But our offensive efficiency wasn’t great.”

In the third quarter, the Huskies turned it on and never looked back. Cassidy Trotter lit the flame with back-to-back threes to open the third. She led the team with 15 points and had an impressive six assists and five steals.

“Cassidy was open and able to get those threes and works so hard on the court and in practices,” said Hoyt.

A five-point lead turned into a 13-point tilt by the end of the third. Part of that slant came from the sharp shooting of Jordan Ludescher and Alex Rondorf. Both had 10 points each.

As a team, the Huskies shot 38 percent from the floor while the Lakers shot 32 percent. LSSU had just one player in double figures, and that was Makenzie Bray with 15 points.

Hoyt was also please that her squad’s turnovers were limited to just 12.

“It is our goal to have 12 or less,” she said. “It is something we have been working on in practice and we will continue to do so.”

She and the Huskies will have four games in the next week. With that in mind, Hoyt and her coaching staff have been trying different combinations of players on the court and that include last night.

“We played a lot of people today, and everyone was capable of stepping up in a variety of ways,” she explained. “We were trying to get players minutes as we have a lot of games coming up. We want to rest bodies, but we also want people to get in and get some experience as we do not know what is going to happen. Everybody needs to be ready to go.”

The Huskies and the Lakers will be ready to go today with a 1 p.m. start.
