HOUGHTON — After winning a double-overtime thriller last weekend on the road over the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals, the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is looking forward to being back in the Wood Gym to face the Davenport University Panthers on Friday and Saturday.

The Huskies will take an impressive 10-1 record into this weekend and face a 4-7 Panther team. Both games are set to tip off at 3:30 p.m. at the Wood Gym.

According to Tech head coach Sam Hoyt their winning record has been a team effort all season.

“It is encouraging to know that we have players that can step up in a variety of ways to win games,” she said. “I trust this team to take shots and execute on any given night.”

Hoyt added that records don’t matter. For her it is important to face the game that is in front of her and the team.

“I’ve emphasized this from the start,” Hoyt said. “The other team’s record is not important to us. We need to come in everyday and execute in practices and take that energy into the games. It’s there that we want to take the game one possession at a time. We talk a lot about perusing excellence, and in the end, we want to get better.”

As for this weekend’s matchup, Hoyt said the Huskies will be facing a very athletic Panther team.

“They have three really powerful guards,” she said. “One of them is Toni Grace who is averaging close to 20 points per game. So our transition defense will be key in slowing them down and keeping their shooters out of the paint.”

Davenport will arrive at the Wood Gym averaging 64 points per game. They are shooting 36 percent from the field and 31 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

Meanwhile, the Huskies are averaging 64 points per game and are shooting 40 percent from the field. They are shooting at a 32% clip in the three-point area. They are led by Ellie Mackay who is putting in 15 points per game.
