Houghton track and field wins MHSAA D1 regional

HOUGHTON — The Houghton boys’ and girls’ track and field team took first place on Thursday at the the MHSAA Division 1 regional meet.

For the boys, Houghton earned a winning score of 70. Kingsford followed with a score of 49. Negaunee came in third with 28 points followed by Calumet who scored 22. Westwood came in last with 17 points.

“We are soaking this victory in,” said Gremlins boys’ head coach Erik Johnson. “It has been a tough year for sure, and we are grateful to have gotten to this point and having had such great success. Today was a testament at how hard the kids have worked all season and have come together as a team. The coaches and I couldn’t be more pleased with their effort.”

On the girls’ side, Houghton earned a winning score of 69. Negaunee came in second at 40.5. Westwood took third with a score of 33.5. Calumet notched fourth place at 24, and Kingsford was last with 20 points.

“We’ve been doing really well, said Gremlin’s girls’ head coach Alissa Schmidt. “After missing a season, we have a lot of new kids who have surprised us with their efforts.”

With the victory, the Gremlins will head to Gwinn for the U.P.’s conference meet next Wednesday.

The meet included five regional teams and 17 different events.
