Ontonagon girls win Copper Mountain track and field title

Dollar Bay-TC wins boys title

Ontonagon ran away with the girls Copper Mountain Championship after winning the conference track and field meet Tuesday.

The Gladiators won with 95 points, with Lake Linden-Hubbell (86), Baraga (73), Chassell (37) and Ewen-Trout Creek (34) in the top five.

Gladiators coaching tandem Brian Amos and Julie Roe were named co-recipients of the girls Coach of the Year.

The Dollar Bay-TC boys took first place with 101 points, with Lake Linden-Hubbell (84), Bessemer (73), Ewen-Trout Creek (53) and Baraga (40) in the top five.

The Blue Bolts were guided to Tuesday’s win by Ben Tampas, who was named boys Coach of the Year.

L’Anse’s Kyra Sipe captured three first-place finishes in the meet, and was subsequently named the girls’ conference MVP.

Sipe won the 100-meter, 200 and 400 dashes.

Sipe and the Purple Hornets tied for sixth place.

Dollar Bay-Tamarack City’s Johnny Norland was named the Copper Mountain boys MVP.

Norland won the 400 dash and took second place in the 200 dash. He anchored the 3200 relay team for a first-place finish and helped the Blue Bolts boys capture first place in Tuesday’s meet.

At the heels of each of Sipe’s three wins was Ontonagon, who took second in two of them. Lilly McIntyre took second in the 100 and MaKennah Uotila was second in the 400. The Gladiators took fourth through sixth places in the 200.

Nicole Lukkari got Ontonagon’s first win in the 100 hurdles and teammate Kiirsa Kolpack took second place. The duo repeated first and second finishes in the 300 hurdles.

The Gladiators won the 800 relay, composed of Katie Fredrikson, McIntyre, Senia Kolpack and Kiirsa Kolpack. Lake Linden-Hubbell’s relay team (Abby Beaudoin, Melissa Wagner, Camaryn Crouch and Olivia Shank) took second.

Chassell got its lone win in the 3200 relay. The relay team was comprised of Lily Etelamaki, Trisha Pietila, Ayla Miller and Gwen Kangas.

Baraga’s Jaylyne Lindemann won the discus at 102 feet, 5 inches. She took second in the shot put (34-7) behind Republic-Michigamme’s Leah McCraken (35-11). Lindemann’s teammates Corina Jahfetson and Reese Holley took third and fourth, respectively.

Baraga’s Ellie Delene won the high jump at 4-11.

Uotila won the long jump at 14-4. Baraga’s Makenna Hendrickson (13-2) and Ewen-Trout Creek’s Kate Borseth (12-2), Chassell’s Anja Pomoni (11-10) and Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Rebecca Lyons (11-10) rounded out the top five.

Crouch (9-6) and Abi Codere (8-6) took first and second in pole vault for the Lakes.

Boys

The Blue Bolts’ middle and long distance and long distance relay teams anchored Tuesday’s win.

Dollar Bay-TC’s Connor LeClaire swept the hurdles with an 18.6 in the 110 and a 44.4 in the 300.

The Blue Bolts took second through fifth places in the 800 run. They also took second through fourth in the 1600. The Blue Bolts, comprised of Nikolas Thomas, Amos Norland, Davin Hill and Johnny Norland, took the 3200 relay nearly 30 seconds in front of runners-up Bessemer.

The 1600 relay wasn’t completed because of inclement weather.

Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Caleb Klein took second in the 100 dash. He also took third in the 200.
