Djerf, Loukus named top Calumet athletes

CALUMET — Calumet seniors Elli Djerf and Dean Loukus took the top female and male athlete awards at the school’s athletic banquet.

Djerf was named the Holly Jean McCullah Award recipient. She earned 10 varsity letters, including four in basketball, three in volleyball and three softball.

Loukus, named Michigan’s Mr. Hockey, was named the Gipp Award recipient.

Djerf surpassed 1,000 career points in basketball, finishing with 1,125, second-most in school history. She was named West PAC Player of the Year and led the Copper Kings to the brink of a state finals appearance, bowing out in the state semifinals. Djerf was also named an All-U.P. Dream Team selection.

In volleyball, Djerf was West PAC Player of the Year in 2020 and All-Region First Team. Djerf also set multiple school softball records in hits in a season (52), doubles (12), triples (seven), batting average (.634) and also hit for the cycle in 2019. She also carried a 4.0 grade-point average.

Loukus earned nine varsity letters, including four in hockey, three in baseball and two in football.

He was named an All-State Dream Team hockey selection this season, Great Lakes Hockey Conference Player of the Year. He was a 2020 All-Conference First Team selection and All-State First Team.

Loukus set school hockey records in career points (225), tied with six assists in a game, assists in a season (49), assists in a career (143).

In football, Loukus was an All-U.P. Large School First Team selection in 2019 and West PAC Copper Division Honorable Mention.

Loukus also carried a 3.86 GPA.
