Lansing’s Boomtown wins International Frisbee tourney

HANCOCK — After a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 63rd annual Coca-Cola International Frisbee Tournament returned to Hancock last weekend.

After two full days of play under beautiful blue skies, Lansing, Michigan’s Boomtown Saints downed the defending champion Squad from Appleton, Wisconsin, in two straight sets. With the win, Boomtown was able to drink from the Julius T. Nachazel Cup thus continuing one of the longest traditions in disc sports.

Local favorites, The Shottle Bop, finished third, and Marquette’s Wolfpack earned fourth place in the 12-team tournament.

The late Dave Bolyard was awarded the newly renamed Jon Davis/Dan Thorton Spirit of Guts Award for “exemplary sportsmanship, quality of play and most importantly having fun.” The award was renamed to honor the 50th consecutive IFT played by Dan Thorton of Livonia, formely of Hancock.

Guts Frisbee is played by two teams of five who line up 14 meters apart. They then take turns throwing an orange pro Frisbee at each other’s line with disc speeds reaching up to 90 mph. If the receiving team catches a thrown Frisbee with one hand, they receive a point. If the throwing team throws a Frisbee that cannot be caught, they receive a point. Games are played to 21 points and must be won by two points.

Next up on the Guts Frisbee circuit is the US Nationals in Marquette on Aug. 7-8. Worlds will be held in Detroit on Sept. 4-5.

Starting at $3.50/week.
