Weiss, Houghton dominate Calumet Invitational
CALUMET — Senior Eric Weiss and the Houghton boys continued their winning ways here Monday, dominating the Calumet Invitational cross country meet with 28 points.
The Gremlins, winners of three straight, placed four among the top 10. They were followed by Painesdale Jeffers 61 and Negaunee 66.
“Our boys are running terrific,” said Gremlins’ coach Traci Welch. “Our freshmen are running real well. I’m real happy with the way the whole team is running.”
Weiss covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 37 seconds. He was followed by Ewen-Trout Creek senior Jonah Nordine (18:15.3), Houghton freshman Isaiah Lawson (19:09.4), Jeffers senior Simone Barp (19:17.9) and Negaunee junior Judge Anderson (19:29.7) on this sunny, hot and breezy day at the Swedetown Trails.
“I’m definitely happy with that time,” said Weiss, who also won for the third straight time. “This is the hardest course of the year. This is a pretty good confidence builder right now. The footing on this course is tricky. There were some slippery spots out there.”
Houghton junior Tom Knewtson took seventh (19:31) and freshman teammate Birk Seagren was 10th (19:59.9).
The Negaunee girls edged Houghton 45-50 for the title. Third-place Hancock had 73 points.
“Today was a great day for us,” said Negaunee coach Vickie Poupore. “We didn’t have a good race up here last year, but the girls are running with confidence right now. They’re trying to stay with other girls. It’s nice to see then have that confidence. Houghton has such a good program. I’m super proud of the girls Our top two boys (Anderson and junior James Dank) are also doing well.”
Ishpeming sophomore Lola Korpi earned top honors in the girls’ race at 21:18.2. She was followed by Houghton senior Ingrid Seagren (21:39.3), Gogebic (Bessemer) junior Natalie Stone (22:08.8), Negaunee junior Endla Harris (22:12.7) and freshman teammate Marlee Plaxco (22:30.55)
“There was a pack of us in front for a while,” said Korpi. “I think the hills worked to my advantage. I was glad to see that last uphill. Ingrid is a very good downhill runner and I wanted to make sure I pushed myself on those. It was pretty hot out there and I couldn’t feel the wind in the woods. My sister Lanie also ran well. I’m really proud of her for running this year.”
Seagren had won the two previous meetings with Korpi.
“I didn’t feel the best today,” said Seagren. “I’ve had kind of a cold, but did the best I could. Lola ran a great race. I’m happy for her. That was a tough course and the heat was a factor for everybody. I didn’t feel the breeze, although I think it helped. There were quite of us up there in the beginning.”
Stone also found the course and weather conditions to be challenging.
“It’s hot and we had to do that big hill twice,” she said. “You’re tired after that hill. You also get more tired in the heat. It adds to the stress factor, although the breeze definitely helped. It cools you off a little. I kind of coasted on the downhill. It gives you a chance to catch your breath.”
The Gremlins ran without senior Paige Sleeman, who was feeling under the weather.
“I thought we ran pretty well,” said Welch. “We were only five points out of first. Negaunee has a good team. They’re going to be tough. Lola’s a tough runner. I thought Ingrid ran a good race.”
Houghton junior Claire Filpus placed sixth (22:38) and Ontonagon junior Makennah Uotila was 10th (23:25.3).
