Hancock shuts out Jeffers, 5-0

HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs and the Jeffers Jets faced off for the first time this season on Wednesday with the Bulldogs cruising to a 5-0 win.

Neither coach was too enthused with their team’s performance on the ice, but for the Bulldogs (2-4-1), a win is a win. With the victory, the Bulldogs ended a four-game losing skid.

“Our start was good in some ways and was mediocre in others,” said Bulldogs head coach Scott Mikesch. “Some guys came out and just weren’t ready to play. But after the first, I thought we had a more complete effort from all our individuals.”

Jeffers head coach, Pat Nettell went well beyond the first period in his frustration.

“It was sloppy, sloppy hockey,” he said. “It’s as if we took two and a half periods off again. That is our latest trend. We are scared to take the hit and scared to skate with the puck.”

If two and a half periods belonged to the Bulldogs, it was the first and the third periods.

In the first, the Bulldogs put 13 shots on goal but only went in. That was at the 11:23 mark when Max Heinonen was able to push a loose puck in front of the net past Jeffers goalie Simon Rajala.

The Bulldogs would pepper Rajala with 36 shots on the night while the Jets put just 19 on Bulldog netminder Wroblewski.

“Simon did great tonight,” Nettell said. “But the team has to contribute as well. He can’t win games by himself.”

The Jets (2-2-1) best contribution as a team was the second period. They came out with a little more energy on the ice and were able to generate some offense with nine shots on goal. Hancock had the same number of shots. They put two of them in.

The first one was at the 12:38 mark on a power play. There was another scrum in front of the net and out bounced the puck onto the stick of Rudy Bekkala who went all net. It would be his first of two goals in the game.

“Rudy played very well,” said his coach. “We’ve asked him to step up his game, and he has followed through in the right direction.”

Mikesch was also pleased with the defensive play of junior Paul Olson.

“Paul kept the game really simple. He played hard and just steady hockey,” he said. “I don’t think Paul made any mistakes in the game. He did his job almost to the letter.”

It was 3-0 to start the third. Chad Nordstrom of the Bulldogs had Hancock’s other two goals. To close out the second period he lifted a beauty of a shot at the right-side circle that went top shelf. In the third, it was another battle in front of the Jeffers net and Nordstrom was at the right spot at the right time as he tapped it in.

Jeffers visits Houghton on Friday, Dec. 17.

The Bulldogs host Rochester United at 7 p.m. Mikesch hopes his team can tie up some loose end before face off.

“We need to work on playing three periods with everybody who wears a Hancock jersey dialed in and ready to go,” he said.
