Bulldogs dominant in 6-0 win vs. Flivvs
HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs was nothing less than dominant in their 6-0 win against Kingsford on Tuesday night at the Houghton County Arena.
The Bulldogs controlled the game from beginning to end, outshooting the Flivvers 43-7.
“We played a real good game,” said Hancock head coach Scott Mikesch. “I thought, for the most part, we were within our systems, and we didn’t get sloppy when we got a lead. That’s what we were trying to get them to do.”
Chad Nordstrom was the driving force behind Hancock’s success with six points, one goal, and five assists. He has five goals and 14 assists this season.
“Nordstrom has just been playing great,” Mikesch said.
A bright spot for the Flivvers was sophomore goalie Isaiah Anderson. Anderson made 37 saves on 43 shots.
“Our goaltender was solid,” said Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge. “He saw a ton of shots; he did really well.”
After the opening faceoff, Hancock did not waste much time getting on the scoreboard. Senior forward Todd Anderson found the net assisted by sophomore forward Bryce Hanner and Nordstrom just 1:24 into the game. A little under five minutes later, the Bulldogs struck again thanks to an unassisted goal from Nordstrom. With 10:49 left in the opening period, the score was 2-0 Hancock. Nordstrom connected with Sophomore forward Bennett Sturos to increase the Hancock lead to 3-0 with 4:05 left in the first frame. The Bulldogs took the 3-0 advantage into the first intermission. Hancock heavily outshot Kingsford in the first period, 18-2.
The Bulldogs controlled the start of the second period. At the 3:33 mark of the period, junior forward Sam Bastian tipped a Nordstrom shot from the point. The deflection beat the Kingsford goalie and gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
The Flivvers didn’t penetrate the Bulldogs’ strong defense for most of the period. The Flivvers broke through with three minutes left when Hunter Fortner got behind the Hancock defense and found himself alone against Hancock senior goalie Isaak Pietila. Pietila got the best of Fortner and kept his shutout alive. That wasn’t the last breakaway Pietila had to face in the second period. Thirty seconds before the second intermission, Kingsford’s Jaxon Buckley had an open look at the goal and missed the net. At the end of the second period, the score was 4-0 in favor of the home team. The Bulldogs outshot the Flivvers 10-1 in the second frame.
The third period was more of the same. Hancock dominated the play and denied Kingsford any great chances to score. The final period was scoreless until the 13:19 mark when Nordstrom hit Todd Anderson through the neutral zone leading to a two on one. Anderson slid the puck through the defender and found Calvin Heinonen on the back door for a tap-in. With 3:41 left in the game, Hancock had a commanding 5-0 lead. Hancock added to the score when Senior forward Rudy Bekkala buried a rebound off a Heinonen shot to make it a 6-0 game with 31 seconds left. The third period shots were 15-4 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Hancock’s next game will be at home against Negaunee at 7 p.m. Thursday. Kingsford plays in the Traverse City Showcase on Friday.
