Copper Kings girls rout Gwinn

CALUMET — Calumet dominated Gwinn 71-20 on Friday to remain unbeaten.

The Copper Kings’ dominance has been consistent throughout the year. On average, the Kings have outscored their opponent by 27 points.

“I mean, we have a good team,” said Calumet head coach Matt Laho. “For us, it’s just create pressure, create turnovers, score points off turnovers, and then play good defense. Everything for us starts through our defense,” Laho said. “We spend a lot of time in practice making sure our defense is right. Then we try to build our offense from there.”

Calumet (9-0) wasted no time to grab a big lead after the tip-off. The Kings scored 12-points in the first two minutes and had a 12-0 lead with six minutes to go in the first quarter. Gwinn made a couple of free throws, but Calumet responded with eight straight points and held an impressive 20-2 lead with less than four minutes left in the quarter. After a Gwinn basket, the Kings made a run that ended with the quarter. The score entering the second frame was Calumet 31 Gwinn 4.

The King’s second quarter was not as successful as the first. However, they still dominated the game. At the midway point of the quarter, Calumet increased their lead to 40-5. The teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first half, and the Kings had a 49-11 advantage.

With the Calumet lead over 30-points, the second half started with a running clock. Calumet scored seven points in the first four minutes of the quarter and held a 56-11 lead. The only scoring for the Modletowners in the third period came with one minute remaining. Calumet took a 61-13 lead into the fourth quarter.

When the fourth quarter started, the Kings were looking to see out the game. Calumet had a 65-15 lead with four minutes to go. In the final minutes, the teams traded buckets, and when the buzzer went, it was a 71-20 victory for the Kings.

Senior Marybeth Halonen led the Kings with 16 points, senior Jana Loukus had 15 points and seven assists, sophomore Caitlyn Strom scored 12, and senior Alexis Strom had nine points with seven assists.

Calumet’s next game is at home against Marquette on Monday, January 24th, at 7:15 p.m.
