Copper Kings take control, dispatch Bulldogs 50-33

CALUMET — Defense led the Calumet Copper Kings boys basketball team in their 50-33 rout of the Hancock Bulldogs on Thursday.

Calumet held Hancock to just 15 first-half points. The high-pressure defense created offensive success for the home team.

“Our defense makes our offense go,” said Calumet head coach Frank Bonacorsi. “Defensively, our attitude and pressure and how we attack was awesome. We were dialed in.”

The Kings (6-3) went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter and a 12-0 run in the third. Those runs drastically changed the shape of the game in Calumet’s favor.

“We locked down on defense and were able to get better looks,” said Bonacorsi. “Then we were able to sustain some of those runs.”

The Bulldogs (1-8) are a young team with four sophomores and three freshmen.

“Defensively, we were holding them pretty good until we started making young mistakes,” said Hancock head coach Zack Ohtonen. “We are very young. I think they will be a solid team in the future.”

The game started with a Calumet basket, then Hancock followed it up with three points. The Kings scored 13 straight for a 15-3 lead with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The Bulldogs got three points before the end of the opening frame, and the Kings took a 15-6 lead into the second.

Hancock made a push and went on a 6-2 run to the halfway point of the second quarter. With the score at 17-12, the Kings got back on track and outscored the Bulldogs 11-3 to end the quarter. Six of the King’s points in that run came in the last minute of the first half.

Calumet led 28-15 at halftime.

The Copper Kings kept momentum rolling into the second half. The Kings went on a 12-0 run after the Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a basket. Hancock broke up the run with a free throw at the 5:50 mark to make the score 40-18 in favor of the home team.

The Bulldogs outscored the Kings 5-3 in the remaining 2:10 of the third, but still trailed heavily 43-23 heading into the final quarter.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, only three points were scored, two for Calumet and one for Hancock. Calumet had a commanding 45-24 lead with four minutes left in the game. Calumet rode out the rest of the game and took home a 50-33 victory.

Senior Lyle Poyhonen led the Kings with 12 points, senior Dryden Nelson had 11, and senior Kip Kangas added eight.

Alex Pietila had 10 points, and Ned Larson chipped in with eight for the Bulldogs.
