Houghton girls sink Calumet, 58-49

HOUGHTON — The outcome was different in the reverse fixture between the Houghton Gremlins girls basketball team and the Calumet Copper Kings.

The two powerhouses met on the Gremlin’s home court, and Houghton handed Calumet its second loss of the season, 58-49.

Houghton’s record improved to 14-3, and Calumet fell to 14-2.

The Copper Kings (14-2) are scoring an average of 64 points per game, and the Gremlins held them well below that.

“The style of their pressure is to increase the tempo of the game,” said Houghton head coach Julie Filpus. “We felt we could beat the pressure and not get baited into that fast pace, and we did a heck of a job with that part.”

The game was close, and the lead changed multiple times, but the Kings were not happy with how they came to play.

“We slowed ourselves down,” said Calumet head coach Matt Laho. “We were flat-footed, and we weren’t jumping on the ball. It’s just a matter of us not executing,” said Laho. “We just have to be more fundamental, focus on working hard, max effort, when we’re out on the floor jumping to the ball and keep talking to each other.”

The game started with a Houghton basket, but the Kings followed it up with a run of nine points. The Gremlins scored another basket before the halfway point of the first quarter, and the score was 9-4 Calumet. The Gremlins outscored the Kings 6-2 in the final four minutes of the quarter to make it an 11-10 game. Calumet took the slight one-point advantage into the second quarter.

The second quarter started with four straight Houghton points. Calumet scored seven over the next three minutes, and the Gremlins scored two. Calumet led 18-16 at the mid-point of the second. Neither team could get an extended run of points in the minutes before halftime, but they exchanged points. Both teams added four points, and with two minutes left in the quarter, Calumet had a two-point lead, 22-20. The Gremlins scored six in the two minutes before halftime, and the Kings scored two. Heading into the break, Houghton had a 26-24 lead.

The second half started, and the Gremlins continued where they left off and went on a 9-3 run in the first two minutes of the third quarter. Houghton jumped to a 35-27 lead. The Kings went on a run of their own, and with four minutes left, Calumet trailed 37-22. The Kings scored five more points before the end of the third, and Houghton only scored two. The Gremlins still had a slight lead, 39-38.

The teams traded baskets for the first half of the final quarter, with Houghton coming out with a 47-43 advantage. In the last four minutes of the fourth quarter, the Gremlins only allowed six Copper King points.

Junior Annika Peterson led Houghton with 20 points, junior Meghan Trewhella scored 18, and junior Stella Wickstrom added 10.

Senior Marybeth Halonen scored 12 points for Calumet, and senior Jana Loukus had 10.

In January, the Kings won the first of the two meetings, 66-49.

Calumet visits West Iron County at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, while Houghton hosts Marquette.
